Delete Your PopaDex Account

Complete guide to permanently deleting your PopaDex account and understanding data retention

You can permanently delete your PopaDex account at any time. This guide explains the deletion process, what happens to your data, and important considerations before proceeding.

⚠️ Warning: Account deletion is permanent and irreversible. All your data will be permanently deleted after a 30-day grace period.

Before You Delete

Consider Alternatives

Pause instead of delete:

  • Disconnect bank accounts (stop automatic updates)
  • Stop using PopaDex without deleting
  • Keep historical data for future reference
  • Reactivate anytime

Export your data first:

  • Download all transactions (CSV)
  • Save net worth reports (PDF)
  • Export complete backup (JSON)
  • See Export Guide

What Gets Deleted

Permanently removed:

  • All transaction history
  • Account connections (bank links terminated)
  • Net worth tracking data
  • Custom categories and budgets
  • Settings and preferences
  • User profile information
  • All uploaded documents

Timeline:

  • Day 0: You request deletion
  • Days 1-30: Grace period (can cancel)
  • Day 30: Permanent deletion (cannot be undone)

How to Delete Your Account

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Sign in to your PopaDex account
  2. Go to Settings → Account
  3. Scroll to bottom: “Danger Zone”
  4. Click “Delete My Account”
  5. Read warning carefully
  6. Check boxes confirming:
    • I understand this is permanent
    • I have exported my data (if needed)
    • I want to delete connected bank accounts
  7. Enter your password to confirm
  8. Click “Delete Account Permanently”

Confirmation

After requesting deletion:

  • Email sent to your address
  • Contains deletion confirmation link
  • Click link to finalize request
  • 30-day grace period begins

Why email confirmation?
Prevents accidental or unauthorized deletion.

Grace Period (30 Days)

What Happens

Days 1-30:

  • Account is suspended (cannot log in)
  • Data is preserved but inaccessible
  • Bank connections are terminated
  • Can still cancel deletion

Canceling Deletion

Changed your mind?

  1. Click link in deletion email
  2. Or visit: app.popadex.com/account/restore
  3. Enter your email
  4. Click “Cancel Deletion”
  5. Check email for restore link
  6. Account fully restored with all data

Available: Anytime during 30-day window

After 30 Days

  • All data permanently deleted
  • Cannot be recovered
  • Must create new account to use PopaDex again
  • Previous data gone forever

E2EE Accounts

Special Considerations

If you have End-to-End Encryption enabled:

Data deletion:

  • Encrypted data deleted immediately
  • Recovery key becomes invalid
  • Even we cannot recover your data

No grace period exception:

  • Same 30-day window applies
  • But data is unreadable even during grace period
  • Cancel deletion restores access (data still encrypted)

Recovery Key

If you delete account:

  • Recovery key becomes worthless
  • Cannot be reused
  • Shred physical copies
  • Delete from password manager

Bank Connections

What Happens to Linked Banks

Immediate:

  • Plaid/GoCardless connections terminated
  • PopaDex can no longer access account data
  • Banks are notified

Important: PopaDex deletion doesn’t close your actual bank accounts. Only the connection is removed.

Revoking Access

Also revoke from bank side (recommended):

US (Plaid):

  1. Log in to bank website
  2. Settings → Security → Third-Party Access
  3. Find “PopaDex” or “Plaid”
  4. Click “Revoke Access”

EU (GoCardless):

  1. Check with your bank
  2. Manage connected apps
  3. Remove PopaDex authorization

Data Retention

What We Keep (Legally Required)

After deletion, we retain for regulatory compliance:

Financial records: 7 years

  • Transaction metadata (dates, amounts)
  • Account types (not balances)
  • Not identifiable to you

Legal records: 10 years

  • Terms acceptance logs
  • Privacy policy versions
  • Dispute resolution records

Security logs: 1 year

  • Login attempts (IP addresses)
  • Security events
  • Anonymized after 1 year

What We Delete Immediately

  • Personal information (name, email, DOB)
  • Financial account details (account numbers, balances)
  • Transaction descriptions (merchant names, notes)
  • All user-generated content
  • Encryption keys (if E2EE)

GDPR Right to Erasure

EU users: Account deletion fulfills your GDPR “right to erasure” (Article 17).

Exceptions (we retain if):

  • Legal obligation requires it
  • Regulatory compliance (financial records)
  • Ongoing legal claims

Anonymized data: May be retained for statistical analysis (cannot identify you).

  • No further charges
  • Pro-rated refund if within 14 days (EU law)

  • Contact support within 7 days for consideration
  • Subject to Terms of Service

Refund Process

To request refund:

  1. Email [email protected] before deleting

  3. Wait for response (2-3 business days)
  4. Refund processed to original payment method

Eligible:

  • EU users: 14-day cooling-off period

Common Deletion Scenarios

Scenario 1: Trying Different Service

Better approach: Don’t delete yet

  • Keep PopaDex account (free tier)
  • Try other service
  • Compare before deciding
  • Come back anytime

Scenario 2: Privacy Concerns

Alternatives to deletion:

  • Enable E2EE (we can’t see data)

Scenario 3: Not Using Anymore

Why not keep?

  • Free tier costs nothing

If hacked, DON’T delete:

  1. Contact support immediately
  2. Change password

  4. We’ll help secure account
  5. Delete only if you want to after resolution
