What is actually in the free workbook
We inspected the exact Basic XLSX served by this site. It contains four worksheets: Net Worth, Monthly History, Asset Allocation and Instructions. Its formulas calculate asset and liability totals, month-to-month changes, net worth and allocation; two charts show history and allocation. A representative input change also recalculated correctly in a disposable LibreOffice copy. The published download was not changed.
| Checked | What we observed | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Balance sheet | Assets minus liabilities feeds the current and prior net-worth totals. | Replace every fictional sample balance before personal use. |
| Monthly review | The history sheet has 24 dated rows, net-worth formulas and a trend chart. | You copy totals into history manually. Blank future rows calculate as zero and the chart plots them, so do not treat unused rows as observed history. |
| Allocation | Cash, investment, property and other-asset rows feed percentages and a chart. | This is an asset mix, not investment advice or holding-level analysis. |
| Connections and currency | The workbook has no bank feed or live market-data connection. | Use one reporting currency. Convert mixed-currency balances before entry and record the rate/date separately. |
| Recalculation check | Changing one current balance by 1,000 increased total assets and net worth by 1,000 in LibreOffice; 57 formulas and two chart objects remained present. | This is a representative LibreOffice check, not certification of every edit or every Excel version. |
| Google Sheets conversion | The exact XLSX converted into a private QA Sheet with four tabs, 57 formulas, no formula errors and both chart objects present. | Visual round-trip comparison found that the allocation legend text and monthly chart category labels were lost. Verify or rebuild those labels. The private QA copy is not the public template. |

Why Track Your Net Worth?
Most people check their bank balance but never look at the full picture. Knowing your net worth (what you own minus what you owe) helps you make better decisions about saving, investing, and spending.
Everything in One Place
Stop logging into five different apps to figure out where you stand. Add your savings accounts, ISAs, pensions, property values, crypto, and debts into one spreadsheet. Get a single number that actually means something.
Use One Reporting Currency
The workbook does not convert currencies. If your balances span countries, convert each value to one reporting currency and record the exchange-rate date separately.
Your Data Stays Yours
The download is a standalone XLSX with no PopaDex account or built-in connection. You decide whether to keep it on one device or copy it to cloud storage or backups, so protect the file and every place you store it.
After your first spreadsheet snapshot
Keep using the spreadsheet if it meets your needs. An app becomes worth considering when maintaining dated balances and currencies is the work you want to reduce.
- Save an untouched copy of the template and a dated copy of your first completed balance sheet. Check totals and debt signs before adding charts or automation.
- Use the same review date each month. Preserve prior snapshots instead of overwriting your only record, and note when a property or pension valuation is older than other balances.
- If you try PopaDex, enter current balances manually first and compare the result. Downloading a spreadsheet does not create an app account or start a paid subscription.
- Keep your original file. The app’s monthly-balance CSV importer uses a specific format; an Excel file, a Google Sheets workbook, and a PopaDex CSV export are not automatically interchangeable.
Before you commit: There is no verified one-click import of these complete workbooks into PopaDex. Historical currencies, negative values and existing records need a separately tested migration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about tracking net worth with Excel.
How do I create a net worth tracker in Excel?
Download the Excel template, then enter your assets (bank accounts, investments, property, pensions) and liabilities (mortgages, loans, credit cards) into the designated cells. Excel automatically calculates your total net worth. Save the file and update it monthly to track your progress over time.
Is there a free Excel template for tracking net worth?
Yes. Download the Basic XLSX directly with no email, PopaDex account or payment. The inspected file contains four worksheets, 57 formulas and two charts for asset, liability, net-worth, monthly-history and allocation tracking.
What is the advantage of Excel over online net worth trackers?
The workbook has no built-in connection and can be used without a PopaDex account. You decide whether it stays on one device or is copied to cloud storage or backups, so protect the file and every place you store it.
Can I track multiple currencies in the Excel net worth tracker?
Use one reporting currency throughout the workbook. If your balances use different currencies, convert each amount before entry and record the exchange rate and date separately; the workbook does not fetch or preserve original-currency values. The multi-currency net worth tracker guide explains the app's separate plan and connection boundaries.
How often should I update my Excel net worth spreadsheet?
Monthly updates are ideal for most people. This provides enough data points to see trends without being overwhelming. Set a recurring calendar reminder for the same day each month (e.g., the 1st or last day) to build a consistent tracking habit.
What is a healthy net worth for my age?
Net worth benchmarks vary widely based on income, location, and life circumstances. A common guideline is to have saved 1x your annual salary by age 30, 3x by 40, and 6x by 50. However, the most valuable insight comes from tracking your own progress over time rather than comparing to others.
Should I include my primary home in my net worth?
Yes, include your home equity (current market value minus remaining mortgage). Your home is typically your largest asset. Some people track "liquid net worth" separately (excluding home equity) to see how much wealth they could access quickly.
